SPECIAL EVENT: Friday July 22 7:00PM: A Tribute to Aviation Films Cinema and Aviation have been around the same amount of time. They both started around the turn of the century (1900s). We thought it would be fun to show some efforts in cinema that involve aviation. 
Feature: NIGHT FLIGHT (1933) (85 Min) USA On Friday, July 22 at 7:00 PM, Cafe Cinema will show director Clarence Brown's NIGHT FLIGHT (1933), a film that hasn't been shown in any format since 1942 because of rights issues. This aviation drama produced by David O. Selznick stars a "bigger than life cast" which includes Clark Gable, Helen Hayes, Myrna Loy, Robert Montgomery and brothers John and Lionel Barrymore. Set in South America, it's based a novel by Antoine de Saint-Exupery (The Little Prince). 
Only MGM Studios, with their fantastic 'more stars than there are in the heavens' slogan, would be able to cast a film like this one. NIGHT FLIGHT was re-released literally just a few days ago and we have the newly restored print ready for film night. 
There is a little history behind NIGHT FLIGHT thats worth pointing out. In his attempt to one up Howard Hughes' aviation epic HELLS ANGELS, David O. Selznick created "the GRAND HOTEL of adventure films." John Barrymore stars as the man in charge of an air delivery service's Buenos Aires office. He doesn't care what the conditions are as he orders his men to bring in the mail no matter what. Lionel Barrymore plays the chief inspector, Clark Gable a pilot having great issues with a storm, Helen Hayes his worried wife and Robert Montgomery is a womanizing flyer.
